Gracie has been inseminated

As I have already mentioned neighbors are great. With the help of our neighbor, Gracie, our milk cow, was artificially inseminated last week. It will be awhile before we know if it took. Also, we purchased two holstein calves from a local dairy, we need something to do with all the excess milk. Currently I have been working on building some garden beds for this summer, I might as well take advantage of this unseasonably warm weather. With any luck I will be done with the beds by the end of the month.

Planning

We have deamed January planning month.  By the first of February not only will the tasks of 2012 be identified but also timelines/deadlines will be established.   It is also a goal to have a rough five year plan for the farm planned in the same timeline.  I am happy to say that we are one step closer to getting our milk cow pregnant.    Neighbors are wonderful.  Neighbors with the proper tools, know how, and willingness to help get my milk cow AI-ed is even better.

It’s a new day!

Happy new year.  To sumerize 2011 you could say we built a house.  In the process we let our pasture and flock management slip a bit, as well as the webpage.  Other than potatoes our garden was a failure.  On a bright note we bought a milk cow.  I have also re-evaluated the purpose of this webpage/blog, I would like to treat it as an online journal for my own uses and to provide transparency for our customers as well as anyone else who might be interested.

Unexpected opportunities

The spring has brought some unexpected challenges.  The difficulty of putting my garden while caring for Baby girl was unexpected.  The entire family was sick for two weeks, and the tiller broke.  So the garden is two to three weeks late and it is not yet completely in.  The benefit of a broken tiller is it allows me to become re-interested in deep mulch gardening, and that is how we are planning on finishing the garden, hopefully by the end of the week.  Our grazing plan this year is rather simple, we seem to be chasing sweet clover, trying to prevent it from becoming to mature and unpalatable for the sheep.  Finally we are building a house this summer and that process is just starting.

OK, it seems like spring for Montana.  We already have flats and flats of veggies, this is the earliest we have started, we still need to start more.
